Beginner friendly, but also satisfying for more advanced crocheters. Crochet this richly textured unisex hat that resembles knit ribbing, but stitches up quickly with less than a skein of medium weight yarn.

This crochet hat is one of the first patterns I learned to make. My mother-in-law wrote out the simple directions for me on a notecard and I made hat after hat in a multitude of sizes and colors. Once you learn the basic pattern it’s endlessly customizable.

How to Make a Crochet Ribbed Hat

Follow the simple crochet pattern to stitch up a flat rectangle and then stitch the hat together using a yarn needle or crochet hook.

The rows taper at one end to help create the shaping around the crown. This is done by using a combination of single crochet, half double crochet, and double crochet stitches.

After seaming the side of the hat, use the yarn needle to gather the stitches at top of the hat and pull them all together.

While you can leave your hat as is, you can also add a large pom-pom to the top of your finished hat.

It’s fun to use a bulky or novelty yarn (like a bulky chenille yarn) for the pom-pom.
