Calling all 90’s kids! Scrunchies have come into (and out of) popularity over the years. But recently, they have been having a resurgence. Making these crochet scrunchies out of a luxurious velvet yarn really makes them into a gorgeous piece to add to a top knot of a ponytail with some braids.
Crochet scrunchies are so quick to make that one skein of yard can make quite a few of them! Give them as gifts for everyone you know with long hair.
It’s easy to make these scrunchies in a variety of sizes, from small to extra large (which is what I used for the top knot).
Crocheted Scrunchies Supplies
- Velvet yarn
- 9mm crochet hook
- Hair elastic or ribbon hair tie
The yarn makes the biggest difference in how these scrunchies look. On the top is a bulky yarn that I would typically use a 6mm crochet hook with. On the bottom is the velvet yarn, with the 9mm crochet hook. While the velvet yarn can be compressed, it looks better with the larger crochet hook, and creates a more full look. (It’s also easier to count the stitches with this novelty yarn using the larger hook!)
How to Make a Crocheted Scrunchie
For the small and medium sized scrunchies, I simply crocheted around the hair elastic. You can use a fabric hair elastic or a traditional hair elastic (I used a larger sized traditional hair elastic in the photo below.)
Medium sized scrunchie – Single crochet around the hair elastic and then chain 2 to make the first double crochet. From there, double crochet around the entire hair elastic. You want the yarn to cover the hair elastic even when it’s stretched, so really add in as many stitches as you can. (I made approximately 30 double crochet stitches around my hair elastic.)
Small sized scrunchie – Single crochet around the hair elastic and then chain 1. Single crochet around the entire hair elastic.
See the difference the yarn makes in these two scrunchies. They both use the same type of hair elastic, and I double crocheted stitches around in both. But the velvet yarn creates such a more luxurious final scrunchie!
How to Make a Bulky Crochet Scrunchie
For the extra large sized scrunchie, I used a slightly different technique. For this scrunchie you’re making a long rectangle and then stitching it together like a tube around the hair elastic.
Start by using a 9 inch elastic (if you untie a ribbon tie hair elastic I’ve found this is how long most of them are).
Crochet a chain that is 15 inches long. Chain 1 more and turn. Single crochet into each stitch. Chain 1 and turn. Keep working single crocheting until your rectangle measures 15 inches by 3 inches. Lay the elastic on the crocheted rectangle and stitch the rectangle together to create a tube around the elastic. You will need to knot the ends of the elastic when you’re done, so you may want to pin each end of the elastic to the yarn so you can easily find each end of the elastic when your finished.
Once you’ve created the tube with the elastic in the center, sew the ends of the tube together and weave in the ends.
Here’s the extra large scrunchie around a top knot.
And the medium sized scrunchie around a ponytail.
