Long hair? No problem. This easy crocheted messy bun hat is perfect for long hair.

Messy bun, or ponytail, crochet hat patterns have been popular for awhile, and it’s easy to see why. There’s nothing better than a messy bun beanie for fall and winter. These crochet hats are so versatile and don’t mess up your hair.

This versatile crochet hat pattern is easy to make, in addition to the normal supplies for crocheting a hat, yarn and a crochet hook, the only additional supply is a hair elastic.

One tip: Make sure to use a hair elastic intended for thicker hair. These hair elastics are larger and will make utilizing the hole for your ponytail or messy bun easier.

The hat is crocheted from the top down. In fact, the first step of the pattern is to crochet around the hair elastic. The pattern ends with the ribbing at the bottom.

Supplies

  • 5mm / US size H crochet hook
  • Medium/worsted weight yarn
  • Hair elastic band for thick hair

The texture of the hat comes from using the grit stitch. This is an alternating pattern of double crochet and single crochet stitches that work together to create a lush texture for the hat.

The brim, or ribbing of the hat, is made using front post and back post double crochet stitches. (All crochet terms are US terms.)

The messy bun beanie pairs perfectly with this crochet blanket sweater shawl!
