Indulge in a chocolate plus citrus flavor combination by creating bite sized chocolate orange treats at home
Are there certain foods that remind you of certain people? I know music and scents can have that affect, but food does for me as well. Or food will remind me of an event or celebration. I can’t think about oranges without thinking about my brother-in-law and his wife who have a really cute story revolving around oranges. It was even part of the name of a website that they ran for awhile. And the specific combination of chocolate and orange reminds me of standing in the kitchen with my mother-in-law at her house and her telling me she likes orange chocolate. She’s also the one who introduced me to key lime and chocolate.
The first time I ever remember eating orange flavored chocolate was when we went to London when I was in high school. We bought a chocolate orange and each ate a few slices. It was the first time I had ever thought about chocolate and citrus as a flavor combination. I’ve since become a fan. I am also a fan of dipping items in chocolate. Strawberries being maybe the most obvious, but also pretzels and plenty of other things. It’s not dipping, but raspberries filled with chocolate are really good as well.
The other day when my youngest was snacking on a clementine I realized that with their smaller size they would be perfect for creating bite sized chocolate orange slices.
I used some melting chocolate I got at the grocery store and followed the directions on the package to melt a couple of squares. I prepped a baking sheet by lining it with wax paper and peeled my clementine while the chocolate was melting. Then I just dipped my slices into the chocolate and laid them on the baking sheet to harden.
I added one little extra to my chocolate orange slices, a sprinkling of sea salt. If you use dark chocolate to dip this is a glorious combination. Sprinkle the sea salt before the chocolate hardens so it adheres to the chocolate. Pop the baking sheet into the refrigerator for a few minutes to harden the chocolate and your orange slices are ready to eat.
Enjoy your bite sized chocolate ‘orange’ slices!
