Looking for the perfect winter dessert or a birthday treat for your favorite yarn crafter? Make Knit Cupcakes with Fondant Mittens
It’s my birthday month and nothing seemed more appropriate for my birthday cake than something knit inspired. It all started when I saw a photo a gorgeous three-tiered cake covered in fondant that looked like it was knit. I immediately texted my sister and asked if she could create such a thing. She has experience working with modeling clay and it seemed pretty similar to what you would need to do to make the ‘knit’ fondant.

I decided pretty quickly that I didn’t really need a massive tiered cake for my birthday this year. So I thought of how I could still get a knit cake but on a smaller scale. Cupcakes! And the knit fondant piece is the cupcake topper.
If you’ve made snakes with clay then you can handle this fondant creation. Pull out 4 equal pieces of fondant and roll them out into long pieces. Take two pieces at a time and twist them together. BUT alternate the direction that you twist the fondant pieces. Put two twisted pieces together to create a fondant knit stitch. Repeat until the knit fondant piece is big enough to cut out shapes with a cookie cutter.
I used a mitten shaped cookie cutter, it seemed fitting for my knit fondant. Of course you could use any shaped cookie cutter that you want. Have fun celebrating with your knit dessert!
