Make beautiful handmade ceramic ornaments! With just a few supplies, DIY vinyl Christmas ornaments are easier than you think.
Some of my favorite holiday memories involve sharing memories around the Christmas tree. My Mom never had a ‘designer’ tree, or a tree with a theme. Our Christmas tree was always filled with ornaments that had stories behind them. As a kid I loved hanging ornaments with my Mom and having her tell me about where the ornament came from, who gave it to her, who made it, and all the stories attached to those memories.
Having those fond memories is perhaps why I love making ornaments so much now as an adult. While I’m partial to making crochet ornaments, lately I’ve fallen in love with these ceramic ornaments. They look beautiful, but I have a secret. They are some of the simplest ornaments to make! It’s easy to personalize these DIY Vinyl Christmas Ornaments with favorite savings, phrases, images, even pop culture references.
All you need to get started are a few supplies.
DIY Ceramic Christmas Ornament Supplies
- Ceramic Ball Ornament
- Metallic Vinyl
- Transfer Paper
I used a vinyl cutting machine to cut out my words and designs, but you can also do this by hand with a craft knife.
Last year I hosted a Very Texas Christmas Party for over 150 guests and for a thank you gift for my committee members I decided I would make them a ‘Merry Christmas Y’all’ ornament. Plus, it’s just a very Texan ornament!
I chose a metallic red vinyl for the words and cut those first. I applied the vinyl words to the ceramic ornament with transfer paper, which helps keep the lettering even.
When you cut the lettering you’re cutting a solid sheet, which means everything is one color. Since these are for Christmas I thought it would be more fun if there were both red and green. After cutting the letters in red I cut some holly leaves and berries in green.
I added the green leaves and berries next to my lettering and now I have red, green, and white ornaments.
While I was making ornaments I decided to make some other fun designs as well! Do you love the Polar Express? I made a ‘Believe’ ornament with red lettering on one side and green jingle bells on the other. This one is for my youngest son who is a fan of the book and movie.
90’s pop culture fans should recognize this reference! This one is a gift for a friend who hosts an annual ornament exchange.
My sister loves to bake and I knew this one would be perfect for her.
I saw the phrase in a pie shop on a trip to Jefferson, Texas and knew it needed to be crafted.
Merry Christmas Y’all! And if you’re looking to knit or crochet some gifts this year, I have some great ideas for you!
