There is something really cozy about granny squares. Probably because I primarily associate them with blankets. Something soft and warm to wrap up in. Most of the crocheted blankets in my family come from my maternal great-grandmother, my Nanie. I honestly don’t have any memories of actually seeing her crochet. I’m guessing she stopped before I was old enough to remember or she just didn’t do it while I was around her. But I do have some things that she made.

I have only ever made one real blanket. I’ve made several baby blankets, but an adult sized blanket is a big project. I have one that I made for my bed probably 10 years ago. It’s massive. I can tuck it in to a queen sized bed. I always intended for it to be big enough to cover my bed, but it ended up being even bigger than I had planned. As you can imagine it too me a few months to finish.

I decided to take that warm cozy blanket feeling and turn it into an ornament. My mother-in-law actually inspired this. She had seen a photo of something similar and asked if I could teach her how to make one. Since you start a granny square with a circle, and then turn it into a square I figured I could easily crochet a granny square around an ornament.

The ornaments I picked are plastic, with kids around I prefer non-breakable ornaments. And I thought they might be easier, and safer, to craft with.

I measured the widest part of my ornament and made my increases until I reached that circumference. Then I started decreasing, putting the ornament into the granny square cover before the circle got too small for it to fit.

The color possibilities with these ornaments are limitless. I just used stash yarn I had on hand that was all the same weight, and I stuck primarily with Christmas colors.

Medium weight yarn
Size I/9/5.5mm crochet hook
Clear plastic ornaments (mine were large, almost 14 inches around)

Granny Square Crochet Ornaments Pattern

Chain 4

Round 1: In 4th chain from hook make 11 double crochets. Slip stitch to the chain at the beginning of the round.

Round 2: Chain 2, dc into the same stitch, ch 1. *2 dc in next stitch, chain 1* repeat to finish round. Slip stitch to the chain at the beginning of the round. (24 double crochets and 12 chain 1 spaces)

Round 3: Chain 2, 2 dc into the same stitch, ch 1. *3 dc in next stitch, chain 1* repeat to finish round. Slip stitch to the chain at the beginning of the round. (36 double crochets and 12 chain 1 spaces)

Round 4: Chain 2, 3 dc into the same stitch, ch 1. *4 dc in next stitch, chain 1* repeat to finish round. Slip stitch to the chain at the beginning of the round. (48 double crochets and 12 chain 1 spaces)

Round 5: Chain 2, 4 dc into the same stitch, ch 1. *5 dc in next stitch, chain 1* repeat to finish round. Slip stitch to the chain at the beginning of the round. (60 double crochets and 12 chain 1 spaces)

Round 6: Chain 2, 3 dc into the same stitch, ch 1. *4 dc in next stitch, chain 1* repeat to finish round. Slip stitch to the chain at the beginning of the round. (48 double crochets and 12 chain 1 spaces)

Round 7: Chain 2, 2 dc into the same stitch, ch 1. *3 dc in next stitch, chain 1* repeat to finish round. Slip stitch to the chain at the beginning of the round. (36 double crochets and 12 chain 1 spaces)

Round 8: Chain 2, dc into the same stitch, ch 1. *2 dc in next stitch, chain 1* repeat to finish round. Slip stitch to the chain at the beginning of the round. (24 double crochets and 12 chain 1 spaces)

Round 9: Chain 2, dc into each chain space around. Slip stitch to the chain at the beginning of the round. (12 double crochets)

Cut yarn leaving a long tail. Weave yarn through stitches and pull tight. Knot yarn, cut yarn, and weave in the ends.

I changed colors after each round, but you can change colors as often as you’d like.
Round 5 is the widest width I needed and is the midpoint for my ornament. If you have a smaller ornament you might only work to round 4, and then skip to round 7. Increase to the width you need and then start decreasing the number of double crochets in each cluster.
If you need to increase further then just add 1 double crochet to the cluster in each round.
