Donuts for breakfast have turned into a birthday tradition for the kids at our house. But more than any other donut, Littlest loves powdered sugar donuts. So for his birthday this week I picked up a package of powdered sugar donuts as well as a package of chocolate donuts. And then I had a little bit of fun making Reindeer and Snowman Donuts.
I turned the chocolate donuts into all of Santa’s reindeer. We constructed our reindeer with pretzel antlers, candy noses, and whip cream and mini chocolate chip eyes. The candy eyes at the store would work great for these, but I didn’t have any on hand. And yes, we made the same number of reindeer as there are names in the song. It works out well that with three boys they each got three reindeer.
We turned out powdered sugar donuts into snowmen! (Do you want to build a snowman?) We made some that were just the faces with mini chocolate chips for their eyes and mouths and a candy nose. But I also put a couple on wooden skewers so that they looked more like full snowmen.
To go along with our letter N work this week I let Littlest help me with all of the noses for our snowmen and reindeer donuts. I poured out our (small) candy bag and started by having Littlest sort the candy colors. Then we pulled out the colors that we needed for the reindeer (brown), Rudolph (red), and our snowmen (orange).
This isn’t the first time we’ve had fun with donuts. You can see our Easter Bunny donuts (here), and our Halloween donuts (here).
Littlest and I are going to take a break from our letter work for a few weeks for the holidays, but we’ll be back at it in January picking up with the letter O.
What kinds of birthday traditions do you have?
