In December my husband and I celebrated our 15th wedding anniversary. And, yes, that picture up there is our engagement picture. I think I’ve learned some things during the time we’ve been married, and one of them is that it’s fun (and important) to try new things.
My husband likes to tell people that not only have we been married for 15, but I had a crush on him for several years before that. You see while we was a cool senior I was a dorky 8th grader. And, in fact, I was friends with one of his younger sisters. He went off to college and I moved from glasses to contacts. And by my own senior year of high school I finally snagged a date with him.
Our first date was to my senior prom. And it kind of came about by accident. I had planned to go to prom with a group of friends. But at the last minute one of the boys had to pull out (he had made the state track team finals) and we were one male short. My current date was just a friend and I happened to know that my future spouse owned a tux, so I swallowed all of my nerves and called his house. My plan was two-fold.
(1) To ask him outright to prom.
or (2 aka my backup) See if I could borrow his tux and have another male friend wear it.
Luckily for me he agreed to be my date. (Admittedly he was a little reluctant.)
My friend took my then former date to prom and I got to go with my future spouse.
And my prom pictures get to double as our first date photo’s.
And since that first date we never looked back. My Mom said she could even tell the difference from how he acted when he came to pick me up to when we dropped me off. Of course it helps when your first date is 12 hours long. Because in addition to coming to prom he also came to the all-night after prom party lock in at the high school.
And while a 12 hour long first date might be a little intense, you also get to know each other a lot faster.
But long term relationships do require some sense of adventure as well in order to keep the intimacy going.
Our favorite date nights are typically walking to a restaurant in downtown. It’s nice to be together where we get a chance to focus on each other without the kids. Plus I love an evening where someone else cooks dinner. And when we get a chance we love to visit one of the amazing local art museums. And with Valentine’s, and a date night, coming up I picked up the K-Y® YOURS+MINE while I was at Walmart recently. Of course you can also check out the Date Night pack at Walmart.com for discreet purchasing.
Also, just in time for Valentine’s Day, is a special Date Night deal: $50 value 1 free meal for two people from PEACHDISH.com delivered to your door for an intimate night of cooking together, a $5 VUDU movie credit for you to stream right at home and the pleasure of K-Y Yours+Mine Couples Lubricants. Perfect for a date night in!
This is how my husband and I like to celebrate romance on Valentine’s Day. How do you celebrate this special occasion?
