Oven Baked Chili Cheese Dog Casserole

Growing up we ate most of our dinners at home. When I was younger my Dad worked 2nd shift so he wasn’t home at dinner-time. But by the time I was in high school we generally ate dinner together around the table each night. While my Mom cooked most of the meals, and still does, my Dad likes to come up with inventive ideas now and then. He’s had quite a few that centered around hot dogs. From cutting them into funny shapes when we were younger (lanterns, spirals, etc) to pickling them a few months ago. Yes, pickled hot dogs. I’m not pickling my hot dogs, but I have tried a new way at fixing chili cheese dogs that is quick, easy, and makes for a great weeknight dinner. I’m making Oven Baked Chili Cheese Dog Casserole.

I started by grabbing some hot dogs and buns at Walmart. Rather than traditional hot dog buns I picked up a package of brat buns from the bakery. These are a little heartier than traditional buns and I thought would do a better job in the oven. I also picked up a can of WOLF Brand Chili (no beans), shredded cheddar cheese, mayonnaise, and an onion from produce.

Start by placing the buns in a 9×13 pan sprayed with PAM. Then add mayonnaise and a hot dog to each bun.

Top each hot dog generously with the chili. I cook with WOLF Brand Chili about once a week. We love to use it for breakfast with eggs.

Add plenty of shredded cheddar cheese and some fresh diced onions to the hot dogs. Then cover the pan with foil and bake in the oven. 45 minutes later you have a hearty dinner that your family will eat up.

I love adding some fresh garlic to the majority of my dinner dishes. A little olive oil, some diced onions, and garlic in a pan are a sure sign that dinner prep is underway. But I realize that a lot of people don’t like handling fresh garlic. I’ve got a great kitchen hack for peeling garlic. Simply drop a few cloves into a mason jar and shake. That’s it. You literally shake the peel off the garlic. Then you can put it into a press or chopper or however you want to slice it up and use it (or cook with it whole).

Cheesy deliciousness. And with about 6 ingredients a great (and easy) weeknight meal.
