Harry Potter fans! Celebrate with a Harry Potter Birthday party, complete with DIY Harry Potter crafts, Harry Potter recipes, Harry Potter games, and more Harry Potter fun.
Harry Potter Party
It’s hard to believe that the first Harry Potter book was released over 20 years ago. I was a little slow to the series and picked up the first book shortly after the first movie came out in 2001. Since then I have read the series all the way through more than once, and recently I read all seven books aloud to Littlest. He was apprehensive when I suggested the series as our bedtime reading, but quickly became engrossed in the books and soon became obsessed with Harry Potter everything. It was only natural then to throw him a Harry Potter birthday party.
Littlest has a December birthday so over the years we have often had half birthdays and other parties for him. His Harry Potter Birthday party was actually held as a 9 3/4 birthday because he was turning 9 3/4. It was too fun of a circumstance not to celebrate. But of course your Harry Potter party could be for any reason or any age!
Harry Potter Party Crafts
You couldn’t have a Harry Potter party without some Quidditch!
For our Harry Potter Birthday Party we made DIY broomsticks using wooden dowels, plastic tablecloths, and duct tape. Then I made an oversized Golden Snitch using a styrofoam ball, spray paint, wooden skewers, yellow paper, and some glue.
The kids each got a broom and had fun running around after someone holding the snitch.
As part of our Harry Potter Birthday Party we also had the kids visit Ollivanders wand shop and pick out a wand.
I made over a dozen wands from wooden sticks, hot glue, paint, and string. We let the kids each pick their perfect wand match.
One of the first things that happens to a student at Hogwarts is the sorting ceremony. I made House Ties and we sorted the kids into different houses.
After the sorting the kids each wore their house ties clipped on to their shirts.
One of my favorite party decorations were these floating candles made from toilet paper rolls, paper, hot glue, and battery powered tea lights.
We string the candles using clear fishing line from trees at the park to make them look like they were floating.
Harry Potter Party Food
The kids not only got to play Quidditch with a Golden Snitch, but instead of a big birthday cake I made some edible Golden Snitch Cupcakes.
These cupcakes are a plain yellow cupcake topped by an edible golden snitch. The ‘snitch’ is a golden sandwich cookie truffle, dipped in yellow chocolate, with some wings attached.
The birthday boy is not a chocolate fan, so he got an extra special golden snitch covered in gold sprinkles. (Click here for the Golden Snitch Cupcake recipe!)
No Harry Potter party is complete without Butterbeer. This homemade recipe uses cream soda, caramel extract, butter extract, heavy cream, butterscotch topping, and powdered sugar. (Click here for the Butterbeer recipe!)
More Party Decor
Several items of party decor also doubled as party favors! I picked up some stuffed pumpkins for Hagrid’s pumpkin patch, Then let the kids pick a pumpkin before going home.
This basket of rubber balls got labeled as basilisk eyes. The kids had fun running around and playing with the balls during the party.
This sorting hat gift from my sister doubled as a party game.
I knit this Gryffindor scarf years ago, but pulled it out for Littlest to wear. I also got him a robe, broom, and tie. We ordered a bag of plastic glasses for all the kids to wear at the party. He already had a stuffed Hedwig and I had a decorative bird cage. We put the two together and used them for more party decor.
It ended up fairly warm the day of his party so I also made him a heat press vinyl 9 3/4 t-shirt to wear.
The possibilities for a Harry Potter birthday are almost endless! This was a perfect party to have at the park with friends and let the kids run around together. We took some of our favorite pieces from the books and created lots of crafts and recipes for our party, but we could have created so much more. What items would you include at your Harry Potter party?
