Grinch Christmas Tree and DIY Ornaments

November 11, 2019 by Julie 2 Comments

Love How the Grinch Stole Christmas? This holiday make your own Grinch Christmas Tree with DIY Ornaments!

Grinch Tree

It isn’t Christmas without a viewing, or two, of How the Grinch Store Christmas. This year we are having even more Grinch fun by making our own Grinch inspired tree.

My kids all have small Christmas trees in their room. Littlest’s favorite color happens to be green. As I started putting together the idea for a bunch of different green ornaments, I knew this Grinch Christmas Tree would be perfect for Littlest.

What do you need to make your own Grinch Tree? I made 6 different types of green ornaments (2 of each kind) using these supplies:

  • Clear glass ball ornaments
  • Green paper
  • Green paint (2 shades)
  • Green pony beads
  • Green gift bag filler
  • Green glitter
  • Mod Podge
  • Paintbrush
  • greenery

For my 6 ornaments I did two that were painted on the inside, two that were filled, and two that were Mod Podged on the outside. It was one of the Mod Podged ornaments that really put the whole Grinch theme into motion.

The fuzzy modern Grinch ornaments (above) are made by attaching fuzzy felt to the outside of a glass ball ornament. Then I hot glued a piece of greenery around the top for the Grinch hair! Simple, modern, Grinch ornaments.

For my ornaments that are painted on the inside, I did both a glitter ornament and a paint swirl ornament.

For the paint swirl ornaments I used two different colors of shimmery green paint. I squeezed a small amount of each shade of green inside the ornament and swirled them around. Then I let them dry.

For my glitter ornament I filled the inside with a green glitter paint, and swirled it around. This particular paint dries mostly clear other than the glitter. To up the glitter factor I also poured in some actual green glitter in a matching shade ans swirled it around the coat the inside evenly as well. Like, the other painted ornaments, I then had to wait for my glitter ornament to dry.

The simplest ornaments were my two filled ornaments. I filled one with green pony beads and the other with shimmery green gift bag filler. These are also the best for the kids to help with.

My final green ornament was made using green paper and more Mod Podge. I tore the paper into strips and dipped it in water to make it bend around the ornament better. Then I coated all the pieces in Mod Podge. This ornament was done in layers, making sure to cover the entire ornament evenly.

Grinch Tree Topper

With all of the green ornaments finished my Grinch Christmas Tree was lacking a tree topper. In order to celebrate the spirit of The Grinch, and add some red to my holiday tree, I decided to depict the Grinch’s heart as my tree topper. Using thick foam I cut out two heart shaped pieces and hot glued them together, leaving a small opening in the bottom to slip onto the tree.

And there, my DIY Grinch Tree is complete!
