Simple Cowl for Beginners – Garter Stitch Rib Knit Cowl

March 17, 2021 by Julie Leave a Comment

This simple knit cowl is dressed up by adding stripes. The garter stitch makes it stretchy and reversible and you can quickly put it over your head. The ribbed edging allows you to pull it down over your shoulders for extra warmth.

Cowls are always a favorite because they are a bit smaller, and quicker, to knit than a traditional scarf. Of course, cowls are also a fun accessory. Larger cowls, like this one, can be bunched up to create lots of warmth, pulled down over your shoulder, or even up over your head like a hood.

This cowl pattern is great for beginners, but it’s also a relaxing knit for any level of knitter. If you can knit and purl, you can make this charming striped garter stitch and ribbed knit cowl.

Supplies

  • 6mm circular knitting needles
  • Medium weight yarn
  • stitch marker

Garter stitch is probably the most basic knitting stitch. When you’re knitting flat, or knitting on straight needles, you simply knit every stitch on every row. However, when you’re knitting in the round the right side of the work is always facing you. And if you knitted every stitch you would end up with stockinette stitch rather than garter.

To knit garter stitch in the round you just need to alternate knitting and purling the rows. With the cowl laid flat you can easily see the 2×2 ribbed rows at the bottom and then all of the garter stitch rows above them.

To give the cowl some interest you can easily add stripes. Here’s the stripe pattern I used:

  • Rounds 1-8 Purple
  • Rounds 9-12 Gray
  • Rounds 13-20 Purple
  • Rounds 21-26 Gray
  • Rounds 27-30 Purple
  • Rounds 31-38 Gray
  • Rounds 39-44 Purple
  • Rounds 45-48 Gray
  • Rounds 49-56 Purple
  • Rounds 57-62 Gray
  • Rounds 63-66 Purple
  • Rounds 67-74 Gray
  • Rounds 75-80 Purple
  • Rounds 81-84 Gray
  • Rounds 85-94 Purple
  • Rounds 95-100 Gray
  • Rounds 101-121 Purple

Of course you could choose more colors, or knit it all in one solid color.
