DIY Microwave Popcorn

diy do it yourself microwave popcorn

As much as we love popcorn, I’m kind of sad that I didn’t know how to DIY microwave popcorn before now!

Littlest loves popcorn. He would eat it all day long if I let him. Which means that buying the kernels is a much more economical option. But it’s not always the most convenient way to pop popcorn. Meaning, sometimes I’m impatient and don’t want to have to supervise the cooking of the popcorn.

Being able to put regular kernels right into the microwave? I don’t want to be overly dramatic, but I’m going to call it life changing.

And making your own microwave popcorn could not be simpler. You just need a glass or ceramic bowl or dish. I used my 1.5 quart ceramic dish. Then you can use a lid or plate to put over the top. You don’t want something that is super tight fitting, because the steam needs to be able to get out of the dish. I have been cooking 1/4 cup of kernels at a time.

Getting the timing right for my popcorn has been the only learning curve. For my microwave, this size dish, and the 1/4 cup portion size 4 minutes has been our sweet spot. But you’ll need to play around with your own equipment. So far I haven’t had any problems ‘burning’ my popcorn.

Once your popcorn is popped season it as you desire. While butter and salt is what we do most often I do enjoy making a sweet popcorn snack as well. You can see my dark chocolate peanut butter popcorn here.

Ingredients
1/4 Cup Popcorn Kernels
seasonings

Instructions
Pour 1/4 cup popcorn kernels into a glass/ceramic bowl
Cover with a lid or glass/ceramic plate
Microwave 4-ish minutes
Prepare/season/sweeten however you desire!

And you can also use this method to make completely plain popcorn. Which is a great low-calorie afternoon snack option!

Wow Julie – that is super simple – thanks! Can’t wait to try it. I love the convenience of micro
wave popcorn, but most brands have additives that I don’t want to eat, so this is great!

How rad is this? I didn’t even know this was possible! Presley (2 yo) LOVES popcorn & just like yours would eat is all day long! I just buy the bags but that adds up quickly especially if I toss the leftovers every night we have it. Definitely going to buy the kernels now! THANKS girl!

Happy to help! My 5 year old always eats the whole bag 😉 But it does add up quickly! I was so excited to find this option!
