Making goals for the new year, and it all starts with my Word of the Year: Bold
New goals can be made anytime. There isn’t anything magical to me about setting them for the new year. In fact, just a few weeks ago I did a mini blogger retreat where we made vision boards and I created a set of new goals I wanted to accomplish.
When the new year rolls around the tradition that I have started doing is picking a word for the year. And then I create a craft that helps me meditate and focus on that word and the goals that go with my word of the year.
This is the 6th year I have picked a word of the year. Here are some of my previous words:
- 2014 ‘Shine‘
- 2015 ‘Grow‘
- 2016 ‘Impact‘
- 2017 ‘Lead‘
- 2018 ‘Joy‘
My word for 2019 is Bold. I want to be more bold in who I am, both in person and online. More authentic. More vulnerable. Julie Measures started as a place where I wanted to share positive crafts, food, and experiences that I was having. That will still be the focus. But on social media there will also be more behind the scenes. More reminders that I (we) am not striving for perfection, but for progress.
Sometimes in groups I let myself fade into a corner. Afraid to speak a contradicting point of view. I’m learning that others often share that view, but are also worried about speaking up and being bold.
As I thought about the word bold, I kept thinking about diamonds. How they catch your eye. How they are strong. How they reflect the light around them. In my mind diamonds are bold. So my craft for the new year became a yarn wrapped diamond embroidery hoop art piece.
The first step was to bend wire into a diamond shape. Full disclosure, the wire shape was tricky. But you could do this same craft with any shape, so I might do it again with a heart!
Once my wire was bent I wrapped my wire diamond and embroidery hoop with yarn. To connect the pieces, I centered my yarn diamond in the middle of my hoop and then began wrapping yarn around the hoop and the diamond.
With my bold diamond embroidery hoop hanging up near my desk I feel ready to take on the new year!
