Paint a Pillow

We like bright bold colors at my house. My husband studied interior design and we don’t necessarily have a traditional color scheme going on. My living room is home to an orange couch. I can’t always find accessories in the right colors to match what we already have.

Being able to personalized items is one of my favorite things about knitting or creating, so I was really excited about creating some personalized pillows recently for our living room.

With Paint-A-Pillow you get to pick the stencil that you want as well as paint colors and creative add-ons. I went with a geometric pattern that goes well with our living room rug. The pillow kit arrives with your pillow cover already in the painting frame with your stencil on top. I opened the box and followed the directions to prep my paint (basically shake, stir, and pour) and then I was ready to start.

The directions said to start with the lightest color and work to the darkest, so that’s exactly what I did. The kit also came with the paint tray and a paint brush (you can also order additional brushes in various sizes depending on your stencil).

The directions mention that you should be careful not to have too much paint on your brush/roller. This is key. Too much paint and it can bleed under the stencil.

Once the painting was done I let the pillow cover dry in the frame for about 12 hours.

The directions also suggest that you heat-set your pillow cover if you plan on washing it. I have three boys, I ironed my pillow. If you want to use your pillows outdoors just spray with a water-proofing spray after you iron.

Then it was really simple to put in the pillow insert and zip it up. I also made a second pillow with even more custom options, it has tassels and metal studs. Visit my Instagram page to see the pictures.

So pretty that even our cat Ranger wanted to be on the couch with the new pillow.
