Handprint gifts are truly a gift from the heart! See how easy it is to make a DIY Handprint Heart Canvas that makes a special gift.

Handprint gifts are perfect for Father’s Day (or Mother’s Day, or really any time you need a handmade gift!)

Not only is this handprint heart canvas practically fail-proof, but it is a great way for the kids to help with the gift making. Plus you’ll be able to look back over the years and see how much your kids have grown.

Handprint Heart Canvas Supplies

  • Canvas
  • Washable paint (for example, tempera paint)
  • Cardstock
  • Scissors
  • Masking tape or painters tape

The first step is create a heart stencil using the cardstock paper. Select a piece of paper that is roughly the same size of your canvas. I’m using a 12″x9″ canvas and I trimmed down a sheet of 12″x18″ cardstock to be the same size.

Cut out a heart from the cardstock and then use masking tape or painters tape, something easy to remove, to tape it down to your canvas.

For the handprints I decided it would be easiest to fill a paper plate with a thin layer of paint, have the kids dip their hand in the paint, and then press it onto the canvas. You could also use a paintbrush and paint their hand.

The handprints will go inside the heart shape and we can pull off the green paper when we are done.

I have three kids whose handprints I wanted to include on the canvas. started with my oldest child who also has the largest hands. He selected the color he wanted for his handprint and then added them to the canvas. Then I went to the next smallest hand size, and finally the smallest hand size.

Each child chose a different color for their handprints. Once all of our handprints were done I pulled up the tape and took off the scrapbook heart.

The finished result was a nice handprint heart silhouette on our canvas! If you want you can write a note to go along the side of your heart, like perhaps the year it was made.
