Family Map DIY Craft – Perfect for Mothers Day

April 29, 2014 by Julie 14 Comments

Our family might be spread out, but we are still close at heart! I’m making a DIY Family Map gift.

On my side of the family, my sisters, parents, and I all live in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. But my husband’s family is all spread out. And a few of us have moved several times! Having family that is spread out, but still close at heart, was my inspiration for this Family Map DIY craft.

My DIY Family Map is three sheets of paper. I picked up some scrapbook paper at the craft store in colors and patterns that I liked. Since this was a Mother’s Day gift I started with some “Mom” background paper.

Either print or draw a map of the United States. (Or country that you are in!) I chose to print my map on this pink polka dot paper. I cut the pap out and attached it to the Mother themed background paper.

Attached the large map to the background paper with some double sided tape or a glue stick.

Then you will need to print out a second map. This one I printed out on some blue paper that matched my Mother background paper. The second map is what I’m using to cut out the states where everyone lives.

The pink map has the outlines of where the states are, so it was easy to match up where my cut out states were supposed to go.

I finished by adding some hearts signifying how many families of kids and grandkids are in each state.

To make it easy to display I put the map is inside a 9 1/2″ by 12″ clear plastic frame. The map is doubling as a Mother’s Day card. I wrote a note on the back and we signed our names.

This is an amazing idea! Even though we all live in Texas, I could just do Texas and cut out where we all live. Brilliant! Thanks for sharing – oh, and Pinning! 🙂

Thanks, Melissa! And a map of Texas would be fun! (I also shared a Texas embroidery craft for my Mom last week!)

Hi Julie! I LOVE your map project! But I’m a Minnesotan, and one little detail sticks out to me like a sore thumb, although, I don’t think non-Minnesotans would notice it. You cut off the Northwest Angle at the top of our state. : )

What a wonderful idea to pay homage to loved ones. I think that I will make a map blanket too! Thank you so much for sharing your design. It’s terrific!
