DIY Felted Acorns Are Perfect For Fall

September 12, 2018 by Julie Leave a Comment

DIY Felted Acorns are simple to create, and add a perfect autumnal touch to fall decor!

Felted Acorns

Fall is such a cozy time of year, and I love adding yarn crafts to my holiday decor. These DIY Felted Acorns are made with just a few supplies using a technique called wet felting.

Felted Acorn Supplies:

  • Wool Roving
  • A bowl of soapy water
  • Acorn caps
  • Hot glue gun

Felted Acorns

If you’ve ever picked up acorns before you know that quite often they become separated from their caps. Which is convenient for these felted acorns. A quick stroll through the neighborhood and I was able to find all of these acorn caps.

While there are several different methods for making the felted balls, the warm water (or wet felting) technique works best for these felted acorns. Gather a bowl of warm water, a couple drops of dish soap, wool roving, and a hot glue gun.

Grab a piece of wool, bigger than you want your finished acorn to be. Dip it into the warm water and then roll it between your palms. The wool will compress and felt. Add more pieces of wool to the outside if you want your ball to be bigger. You might end up with cracks and crevasses in your felt ball, perhaps not the shape you are looking for. If this happens it’s easy to take a small wispy piece of wool roving and wrap it around the outside of the ball. Dip it in the soapy water and continue rolling the ball with your hands. The new layer felts onto the surface and covers any previous imperfections.

When it’s the size that you want squeeze out any excess water and let it dry. overnight.

Hot glue your dried felt ball to an acorn top.

I think they would also make cute ornaments if you added a ribbon hot glued to the top!
