a new way of schooling

September 10, 2013 by Julie 4 Comments

We are in the midst of our third week of school here.

The third week of a whole new way to do schooling.

My autistic son began to really struggle with school last year. And his struggle created a burden for his twin brother.

So this summer was one of searching. Trying to decide what was going to be the best way to educate both of the twins.

In the end, we decided to homeschool our autistic son and continue to send his twin brother to public school.

So far, (mostly) so good.

On our first day of school one of the things that we did was to choose a name and a mascot for our school.
We are the G Academy. (G is the first letter of our last name.)
And our mascot is the giraffe. We looked up animals that started with the letter G. Then I let my son pick which one would be our mascot.
Rather than a slogan, we used the dictionary to look up words that started with the letter g that we wanted to use to describe our school. Those words are listed along the bottom of our logo.
I have to admit that prior to this year I never imagined myself homeschooling. But I have already seen the impact it has made on both of the twins. I am really excited about this school year.

I’m so happy you found a solution for schooling your twins and it’s working out well. I love how you chose your name, mascot and the words to represent your home school. Thanks for sharing on Mommy Monday!

I love how you came up with the name. Using the dictionary is a great way to have fun and build important skills.

JULIE, YOU ARE A BREATH OF FRESH AIR, IF ONLY THERE WERE MANY MANY MORE LIKE YOU, GIVING YOUR CHILDREN EVERY BIT OF LOVE AND CONSIDERATION THAT YOU CAN AND HAVE, ONLY TODAY IT WAS MENTIONED THAT CHILDREN OY 5 YEARS DO NOT EVEN KNOW ONE LETTER OF THE ALPHABET. YOU ARE A TRUE BRITON, A GEM. TELL YOUR LITTLE BOY I AGREE WITH HIS CHOICE OF THE GIRAFFE, THEY HAVE THE MOST BEAUTIFUL LONG EYE LASHES, SO CUTE, BLESSINGS TO ALL. TRIXIE
