m&m red velvet love

Valentine’s Day is one of my favorite holidays. I love decorating for it. I love making treats for the kids. And I even as an adult I love dropping off Valentine’s for my friends. That’s why for this Valentine’s Day I’m showing you how to make a M&M Cookie Mix Friendship Jars.

m&m red velvet cookie ingredients

For these jars you will need a wide mouth 1 qt mason jar. And the following ingredients:

1 1/2 cups M&M’s® (for my jar I used a bag of M&M’s® Red Velvet)
2 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 tsp baking soda
1/4 tsp salt
3/4 cup brown sugar
1/4 cup white sugar

I also suggest an ice cream or cookie dough scoop to help press down the ingredients as you fill your jar.

Combine the flour, baking soda, and salt first and then add them to your jar first. Use your scoop to press the ingredients down.
Then add the brown sugar, and press it down.
Next add the white sugar, and press it down.
Finally add your M&M’s®.

Once your jar is filled you can dress it up a little. I added some pretty XOXO paper to the lid of my jar, and tied some yarn around it.

After you’ve decorated your jar, write up the directions for the cookies at attach it.

Directions
Preheat your oven to 350º.
Pour the entire jar into admixing bowl and combine.
Stir in 3/4 cup of softened butter.
In a separate bowl, beat 1 tsp vanilla extract with 1 egg. Then mix the egg to the flour mixture.
Spoon heaping tablespoons onto a non-stick cookie sheet.
Bake for 10-14 minutes.
Enjoy!

I wrapped my directions around my jar and tied with more yarn. Then I put the jar into a box that I covered (and filled) with hearts. Now they are ready to deliver to friends for Valentine’s Day. And as a bonus, those friends will get to make and share the cookies with their families!

And in case you were confused when reading the ingredient list, yes I did say M&M’s® Red Velvet. I found them in the seasonal candy section at my Walmart. And yes, they are delicious.

In addition to the M&M’s® Red Velvet there were also a wide variety of other M&M’s® in seasonal colors for Valentine’s Day as well. The colors are so pretty to look at that I was inspired to use some as a decoration/candy jar combination. A bag of milk chocolate M&M’s® in pinks and reds poured into a pint size mason jar and a bag of dark chocolate DOVE® Promises poured into quart size mason jar. I added some yarn pom-poms in cream and coral on wooden skewers to each jar.

Of course I don’t expect the kids to just look at the candy in the jars. I also made them their own dessert, Double Red Velvet Cake Bars. Why double? Because they use a red velvet cake mix and they have M&M’s® Red Velvet in them.

Double Red Velvet Cake Bars

1 box Red Velvet Cake Mix
1 egg
1/2 cup butter, softened
1 tsp vanilla
1 1/2 cup M&M’s® Red Velvet (works out to be the entire bag)
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Line a 11″ x 7″ baking pan with foil and spray with cooking spray. (I have to tell you, this is one of my favorite things ever. No messy pan!)
Mix cake mix, egg, butter and vanilla. Fold in half of the M&M’s®.
Press batter into the prepared pan. Top with the remaining M&M’s®, pressing them into the batter.
Bake for 35 minutes (or until inserted toothpick comes out clean). Allow to cool completely.
