We have two cats that we love and adore, Ranger and Coco. My blog is even partially named after my cat Coco and our debate over how to spell her name! This month marks 7 years since we adopted Coco as a kitten. And we’ve had Ranger for almost 5 years. They are definitely members of the family. And like all members of the family I like for them to have a nice busy place (or places, they are cats) to sleep.
With that in mind I decided to make them a DIY Pom-Pom Cat Bed. What cat wouldn’t love a bed made of yarn! And because it’s made of dozens of moms-poms it’s a yarn craft that doesn’t require you to know how to knit or crochet. A yarn craft that anyone can make!
The main supplies are yarn (I used 4 skeins), graph rug canvas, and scissors.
Then you will make dozens of pom-poms. I won’t lie, this took awhile. Put on a movie and get comfy while you make your pom-poms. While there are pom-pom makers I just used my hands to make these. For each pom-pom I wrapped the yarn around my hand (all 4 fingers) about 100 times. Then I cut another piece of yarn and tied it around the center of the looped yarn.
I did shape my pom-poms a little bit. I wanted them to be fairly round and even. But don’t cut the yarn that you tied around the center. Leave that longer piece so you can use it to attach the pom-pom to the rug canvas.
I pulled the yarn through the rug canvas and tied a knot on the back side. Because my pom-poms were evenly sized I was able to chart out how far apart I wanted each pom-pom and that made tying them a lot simpler, I just counted out the spaces.
Once all of my pom-poms were attached I trimmed up the pieces in the back.
I also added a piece of felt to the back to finish it off. I used hot glue to attach the felt to the rug canvas. You could also put down lines of hot glue on the felt to make the bed/rug non-slip. My bed bed will be on carpet so I chose not to make it non-slip, but it would be a nice option if you have wood or tile floors where you want the bed to be.
While we recently moved back into our house, we had been living in an apartment for past 3 years and I learned something very important having 2 cats there. Good cat litter is imperative for happy apartment dwellers!
Thankfully the pet aisle at Kroger is a convenient, affordable, place to pick up all of your favorite Purina staples for your pets to truly give them the star treatment. I was able to grab the latest Tidy Cats® Lightweight cat litter while picking up some ingredients for dinner, all in the same trip. And Tidy Cats® Lightweight offers the same strength Tidy Cats® strength I love, without all the hassle of hauling around a heavy container of litter. A lighter container is great whether I live on the 11th floor or I’m carrying groceries in to my house.
Coco is really enjoying her new pom-pom cat bed!
What do you do to give your cat the ‘star treatment’? Let me know!

I LOVE this idea- and I don’t even mind the thought of making the pom poms by hand! I bet my cat would love lounging on something this plush! #client

I don’t have cats only dogs, but this is the cutest cat craft I’ve ever seen. I just know your cat is in heaven!!!

My cat would love that rug! She loves yarn. We treat our cat like royalty. We give her treats and snuggle with her all day long.

How do you keep the yarn from coming out once you tie to the canvas? I made these as bath rugs with a backing, however, I find pieces of yarn on the bathroom floor.
Julie says
Hi Melanie! There are a few pieces of yarn that have come out, but not a lot.

Could you please tell me about how many pom poms did you have to make? How big is the rug?
Thanks!

Awesome idea!!! Thank you so much!!!

Thid is adorable but please think twice before turning your kitty loose on a yarn based object. When cats chew yarn, even a little, they can’t spit it back out sometimes. This has to do with their anatomy.
This can get gnarled up in their gut and cause a dangerous intestinal blockage. Or, if it comes out the rear, it can pull and cause damage. Please, I’ve known cats who died from a little string or ribbon. Be careful

Im going to try that. How safe is the yarn bed? Can the cats paw at the yarn without it pulling it out? Wouldnt want my furbabies to ingest the yarn.
Julie says
Hi! Mine lays under my desk and my cats like to lay at my feet while I work. I haven’t had any problems with them pulling the yarn out. But you might want to watch them at first. I think hot gluing a backing has helped keep the yarn in place as well.

What part of the craft store is this canvas in?
Julie says
Hi Steph!
At my store it was near the yarn and on the same aisle as supplies to make loop yarn rugs.
Thanks!

Am I missing a step somehow? Don’t you need to cut the loops to make the pom pom? I’m not seeing that step. It is an awesome idea, and i can’t wait to try it.
Julie says
Hi Kira!
Yes, sorry that wasn’t more clear. When I talk about shaping the pom-pom part of what I’m meaning is to cut the loops.
cheers,
Julie

Have you washed yours? I love this idea, but I have a long haired cat, who sheds. I’m just wondering about cleaning it?
Julie says
Hi Brandee!
I haven’t tried washing it. I do shake mine out and use a handheld vacuum on it. I also have some laundry refreshing spray I spray on it.
cheers!
Julie

This looks so cozy for kitty! Am sure any cat would choose this over napping in clothing any day!

I love this idea! I’ll definitely make one for my cat.
