We are a tent camping family. Ever since the twins were little we have taken them on camping trips. And over the past few years we’ve gone from an overnight or weekend camping trip to a full week. But, as much as we enjoy camping, it’s not something we can do every weekend. And without a backyard we can’t even have spur of the moment adventures sleeping outside. But with school out and summer bedtimes getting later I decided to try and see if I could recreate a little outdoor summer fun inside our apartment starting with a summer movie night.
Rather than a traditional tent we’re making blanket forts with plenty of pillows and even a couple of sleeping bags. And because we’re doing our movie watching at night when it’s dark I’m making a campfire dessert that we can enjoy inside. These are grilled cinnamon rolls that we will be enjoying for our dessert. And they really couldn’t be simpler to make. I’m taking some help from Walmart and I picked up a couple of containers of refrigerated cinnamon rolls. Open the package and place them on a hot indoor grill. I’m using a griddle/grill/panini press that I have. It opens flat and has interchangeable plates. For the cinnamon rolls I’m using the grill plates. I started by placing the cinnamon rolls with the topping side up.
Cook for 5 minutes and then flip them over and cook for another 5 minutes. That’s 10 minutes total. Remove the cinnamon rolls from the grill.
While the cinnamon rolls do come with some frosting I made a bit extra just in case. Simple combine 1 cup of powdered sugar with 3 tablespoons of milk. I added in the frosting from both cinnamon roll container and mixed it all together.
To frost the cinnamon rolls I scooped my frosting into a resealable plastic bag and snipped the corner. Then I could pipe the frosting evening over all of my cinnamon rolls. Once they were frosted they were ready to eat! Because this indoor/outdoor movie night is an event I want to repeat throughout the summer I’ve come up with a list of my Top 5 Summer Movie Picks that we will be watching:
- The Princess Bride
- The Sandlot
- Hook
- The Muppets Take Manhattan
- Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief (we are reading all the Percy Jackson books this summer)
I’d love to know what your summer movie picks would be!
Between camping and summer camps (Youngest Twin left for a week long camp this morning) I’m happier than ever to have more data with the Walmart Family Mobile PLUS Plan. With PLUS we get Unlimited Talk, Text, & Data which includes up to 10GB of 4G LTE plus a free movie (new release rental) on VUDU every month ($7 value) per line for $49.88.
I know this summer we’ll be using our free VUDU movie each month as part of our family movie nights. Watching a movie on the TV while we hang out in our blanket fort/tent. Right now you can start service on ANY plan for $19.88, that’s just the cost of the Walmart Family Mobile starter kit. With our Samsung Galaxy S4 I know even if my kids aren’t right with me I can always reach them. As the twins get older and are often off doing there own thing it’s become really important that I can reach them and know where they are.
Of course when I make a batch of grilled cinnamon rolls for movie night I also know exactly where they are, standing next to me in the kitchen! These got gobbled up pretty quickly and have already been requested to make a repeat appearance (and soon).
