DIY Button Mitten Winter Canvas

December 26, 2016 by Julie 5 Comments

I’m all about staying warm and cozy when it’s cold outside. Which made this Button Mitten Canvas the perfect winter decor craft.

When the holidays are over I like to transition the house to winter decorations. Some decorations like snowmen work all winter long. To keep things cozy after the tree and lights are put away I’m making a Button Mitten winter canvas.

We haven’t had much need for coats and mittens yet where I live, but there is still plenty of winter left. To keep things cozy I’m making a Button Mitten winter canvas.

As you can expect, you will need a canvas for this project. I’m using an 11×14 upcycled canvas (I have used it for two other seasonal projects previously).

In addition to a canvas (new or upcycled) you will need:
-White buttons
-Silver buttons
-Black acrylic paint
-Paint brush
-Hot glue gun and glue sticks
–Mitten pattern to trace

I wanted a slightly distressed look to my canvas, so I began by painting a thick coat of black paint. Then I used my hair dryer to dry the paint. This caused the paint to crack and let the canvas show through slightly. It gave me just the look I was going for.

Once the black paint was dry I printed my mitten pattern, cut it out, and traced it onto the canvas using a black marker. The black marker let me see the lines that I traced, but was subtle enough to not be noticeable once I added the buttons.

I used a package of white buttons from the craft store that came in a variety of sizes. The silver buttons are from my grandmother, but you could find something similar at the craft store as well.

I began by hot gluing the buttons around the edge of the mitten. Then I filled in the middle, starting at the bottom and working towards the top. Make sure to leave room for your cuff.

When my mitten was almost full I added my silver button cuff. I used three rows, with patterned silver buttons on the outside and the plain silver buttons in the center. Once the cuff is on you might want to keep adding some more white buttons to have it as solid as you want. I have some buttons glued on top of other buttons.

Then you’ll have to decide how to hang your button mitten. There was some debating in my house about which way was ‘up’!

For now the majority has decided this is the correct way to hang our mitten. It’s the perfect wintery addition to our gallery wall.

Remember to stay cozy this winter!
