Muumuu refashion

April 12, 2012 by Julie 9 Comments

My husband was understandably confused when he came home the other day and I was sitting in front of my sewing machine. As I’m sure you’ve noticed, I don’t sew much. But I have had a couple project idea’s floating around and since it’s getting warmer there was one that I really was excited to try.

Several weeks ago I saw a Muumuu refashion project. Yep, a muumuu. And it was really cute! I have many memories of my grandmother wearing her muumuu’s around the house. I was pretty sure she had several, but when we were going through her closet I could only find this purple one. But I liked the detail around the neckline so I thought I’d give it a try.

Here it is hanging up (inside out because I had already started pinning it). I ended up taking it in around 12 inches or so. Less around the arms but a lot around the middle.

After I had taken it in I had a little internal debate. I couldn’t decide if I wanted to stick with my original plan and make it a shirt, or add some fabric to it to make it a long summer dress. I ended up sticking with my original shirt idea but it was hard chopping the bottom off!

A little hemming and I have a new shirt! (Too bad it was windy outside when I tried to take a picture)

But look! It matches my new shoes.

I’m really happy with how it turned out.

I’m thinking I’d like to practice some embroidery stitches by adding a little border around the bottom. What do you think?

Embroider away! I think it would be a really personalized touch and a neat way to remember your loved one.

That’s pretty cool. I never would have thought to do something like that.
