Dip-Dyed Kool-Aid Tassels

July 7, 2014 by Julie 32 Comments

I am a member of the Collective Bias Social Fabric Community. This shop has been compensated as part of a social shopper amplification for #CollectiveBias and its advertiser #KoolOff.

I am really excited to share a cool yarn project today that doesn’t require any knitting or crocheting skills, Dip-Dyed Kool-Aid Tassels. These tassels are inspired by bright colors and summer drinks.

The first step is to make the tassels. You’ll want something sturdy to wrap your yarn around. Make sure to start and stop your wrapping at the same edge. Then cut all the yarn at that edge.

You’ll need to head to the grocery store for supplies for this yarn craft. I grabbed my Kool-Aid at Walmart. I picked up a new Ready-to-Drink container and five Kool-Aid packets in various colors.

Pour yourself a cold drink. Stay hydrated while you craft! You will also need 100% wool yarn for this project.

Cut another piece of yarn. Wrap it around the center of your tassel.

Cut another piece of yarn. Fold your tassel in half and wrap it around the top. Knot and tuck in the ends.

Now it’s time to start dyeing! Because I am only using these tassels as a decoration and do not plan to wash them they have not been tested for color fastness. This method works great for decorations.

You will need at least three bowls/containers. In the first bowl add a cup of warm water and a drop of dish soap. Put in your tassel and let it soak while you prepare your dye.

Add one packet of Kool-Aid powder to one cup of water and microwave for one minute. Take your tassel out of the soapy water and squeeze it dry. Place your tassel into your dye mixture. Allow to sit for a couple of minutes.

While your yarn is dying fill your third bowl with two cups of warm water. Remove your tassel from the dye and rinse in the clean water.

When your tassel has been thoroughly rinsed squeeze dry (I also used a paper towel to squeeze the tassel at this point). Allow your tassel to dry completely.

Make more colors!

Hang up your pretty new tassels and enjoy!

I had a friend who dyed her hair with Kool-Aid in high school and it took absolutely AGES to wash out so I would say the color fastness of these tassels are pretty good. πŸ˜‰
