Snowman Hat Knit Pattern

Go walking in a winter wonderland anywhere with this Snowman Hat Knit Pattern 

While my kids are hoping for snow, it’s never a guarantee here in Texas. We actually have had snow for several years in a row (other than last year), but you never know. Littlest has been asking me all kinds of questions about temperature and weather as he hopes for snow.

Whether or not we can create our own Frosty the Snowman, I decided I still needed to build a snowman. Or 6.

Of course I really need to give credit/inspiration for this hat to a friend of mine. We were having a craft night and I was bouncing pattern ideas off of my friends. One of them said she would love a snowman hat. Ta-da! I already sent her a photo of the finished hat (which will be a gift to her) so this post won’t ruin the surprise.

This knit snowmen hat features 6 little snowman (who I may or may not be calling Frosty the Snowman) around the hat. The snowmen are three ‘snowballs’ tall. The ‘snowballs’ are stacked on top of each other, largest to smallest.

Once the snowmen were all knit up I added a few button embellishments. You could add extra detail to your snowman as well, like eyes or a nose. I loved the simplicity of just adding the buttons down the center of each snowman.

This pattern uses 5mm double pointed needles, knit stitches, purl stitches, and cabling. I made the hat using worsted/medium weight yarn in a ‘linen’ color. If you have any questions feel free to leave me a comment or send me an email!

Pattern notes
This pattern uses double pointed needles and is knit in the round.
This pattern uses the M1 increase, rather than increasing by knitting front and back. (Here’s  how I prefer to do the M1 increase)
This is an adult women’s size, but would also fit teenagers/older kids.
Gauge: 4″x4″ square is 18 stitches and 24 rows
Yardage is about 120 yards. (The skeins of yarn I get are 140 yards and that is always enough for me.)
The pattern needs 18 buttons for the snowmen (there are 6 snowmen). Additional buttons are optional for eyes or other details.

C4B – means to move 2 stitches to the cable needle, hold the work in back, knit 2 stitches, then knit the 2 stitches on the cable needle. This is a cable worked over a total of 4 stitches. C4F – similar to C4B, but hold the cable need in front.
In addition to double pointed needles I also have a pair of short (8 inch) circular needles that I use to make hats. Either would work to make this hat in the round as written. When I use the 8-inch circular needles, I do switch to the double pointed needles during the decreases.
